- Takes a 235mm sole down a door edge or a length of timber in one steady pass, so you flatten and true a surface instead of chasing high spots with sandpaper. The 44mm cutting iron suits softwood and hardwood, from pine skirting to an oak worktop edge.
- Set the cut before you start: back the iron off, take a test shaving, then advance it until the curl comes off thin and even. Slacken the lever, move the iron, and tighten it firmly before the next pass, because a lever left half tight will let the iron creep.
- Sharpen it before first use. Every hand plane arrives ground rather than honed, and a factory edge will skid over the grain and tear it. Ten minutes on a whetstone or a diamond plate at 25 to 30 degrees turns this into a tool that leaves a finished surface.
- Steel body rather than cast iron, so a knock off the bench does not crack the sole the way it can on a traditional cast plane. The machined base runs flat and true, and the moulded grips give a firm hold when you are pushing across the grain on a door.
- Suits doors that catch, sticking drawers, chamfering a sharp edge, cleaning up a sawn end and general carpentry practice. The iron lifts out for sharpening or replacement. One iron is fitted in the plane; spare irons are not included in the box.
